Motivation: easier said than done

I love Logan Square and believe that it is the "Best Neighborhood", (as all people in Chicago believe that their neighborhood is superior to others).  The Farmer's Markets, flower shops, boulevards, folks out walking and riding bikes, vibrant restaurants...cars even stop for you when you cross the street!  Out on a freezing, sunny morning we stumbled upon one of the many pieces of random art sprinkled throughout the neighborhood; a sign proclaiming:

A motivational sign in a grassy field is nice and all.
But it is not going to do the hard work for you.

That's up to you.

I enjoy motivational signs, pictures, and quotes as much as the next person.  Actually, my Pinterest account is full of them:  "You are never too old to set a new goal or to dream a new dream" CS Lewis, "Decide that you want it more than you are afraid of it", "Little by little a little becomes a lot", "Do it now.  Sometimes 'later' becomes 'never'", "The ultimate goal is doing your best and enjoying it".....cheesy, but when you read them you find that little piece of "I Can" that you need for motivation.

motivation  (ˌməʊtɪˈveɪʃən)

— n
1.the act or an instance of motivating
2.desire to do; interest or drive
3.incentive or inducement
4.psychol  the process that arouses, sustains and regulates human and animal behavior

The thing about motivation is that it's rather transient.  @JaniceBakerRD said it best on Twitter recently:  "Patient: 'I just need to get motivated!'  Me: 'You won't get motivated so just start without it'".

In order to make real progress forward, you need to be inspired for more than a fleeting moment between motivational quotes on Pinterest.  Actually, you need to be able to move forward without inspiration, excitement, invigoration, reassurance, or provocation.  Welcome to the daily grind.  Nutrition education is 10% teaching about food and 90% helping people figure out how to make the changes they know they need to.  What motivates you and how can you harness this fleeting sensation to move forward in a positive way lies within?  What will you accomplish today (with or without your motivation)?
